Sugar on Fire started in February 2018 on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The band members came together through their involvement in the Carolina Bluegrass Band, the ensemble under the university’s Bluegrass Initiative, and their love of acoustic music led them to form their own group.
