The BackBeat

Rock, Beatles Tribute, 60s Cover

Forming in 2001 to play a one-off gig at the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill, The BackBeat had so much fun we decided to keep it going for a while. “A while” became an ongoing adventure involving over 500 shows in 5 states for over 100,000 people. We love what we do. From the beginning our goal has been to perform the music of the Beatles and other 60s groups with absolute “like the record” accuracy, with exact 3 and 4 part vocals, striving for the level of excitement produced on stage in the 60s! We play the same guitar models which the Beatles used for the true 60s sound. There have been personnel changes and different periods over the life of the band. Early on there were college oriented gigs with UNC music professor John Covach, our first lead guitarist. This “academic” period segwayed to the crazy WB Yeats days in Chapel Hill, over 70 shows at the popular venue, with lines out the door once a month for 5 years when Jon Heames was in the lead guitar spot. Increasing outdoor civic festivals, town fairs and concerts have been our more recent pattern. Now, with Zsolt David on drums and Jay Manley on lead guitar the band is in it’s prime. We’re having fun, rocking for all takers on what we consider the greatest rock & roll music ever written! We hope to see You at a show soon. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!
