The Free States

Americana, Bluegrass

The Free States, a bluegrass/Americana/country quartet from the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill triangle, was formed in late 2010 when Pennsylvania native Kevin Flinn left his adopted home of Los Angeles and landed in north Raleigh.

After fronting The Low Countries (a five-piece honky-tonk band) and City Museum (a loud indie-rock outfit) Kevin made a conscious effort to simplify his catalog of songs. Via Craigslist, Kevin recruited a who’s who of veteran Triangle acoustic musicians: Mike Booze on banjo/mandolin, Sam Hart on drums and John Daniels on upright bass.

The Free States play with a unique group dynamic, mixing singer/songwriter heritage with traditional bluegrass and country sensibilities
