Funny How Things Happen
About six weeks ago I was at Niche Wine Lounge in Holly Springs listening to my friend Bud Moffett. As Bud begins his second set, he stops to introduce the “new friend” he’d just made, Lezleigh Vincent, who’s going to sing the Eagles’ Peaceful, Easy Feeling for her friend who’s there celebrating her birthday.
My initial reaction was, “Uh, oh, is this going to be an awkward train wreck.” Funny, how wrong you can be.
Lezleigh starts singing and after the first verse I was blown away by her voice, poise, and presence. By the end of the song, I was trying to figure out how to approach her to see if she’d like to sing on a regular basis with me without coming off like an internet weirdo. I had a Long Time Gone band card with me (my CSNY tribute band) and after congratulating her on doing so well, I handed her the card with instructions to call me if she wanted to play out sometime.
To my surprise, Lezleigh friended me on Facebook later in that same week and we began sorting through songs to put together a set list, plus got ourselves booked at both Niche and Pittsboro’s Roadhouse just a week apart.
This whole thing has re-engerized me due in part to material we’re concentrating on – bluesy, jazzy songs that I find refreshing and challenging to play – as well as Lezleigh’s powerful, sultry voice that inspires me to be on my “A” game and then some.
So, come the new year, hope to see you at Niche on February 22nd. You will NOT be disappointed with what you see and hear!
